ToggleVeneers for chipped teeth work best when the chip is visible, reaches beyond a tiny edge of enamel and the rest of the tooth is healthy: a thin ceramic veneer rebuilds the shape and color and can last 10 years or more. Small chips are often fixed with bonding in one visit, and large breaks may need a crown. I choose by how much tooth is left, not by price.
Veneers for chipped teeth are one of the treatments I recommend most often when a front tooth has lost a corner or an edge and the person wants it to look as if it was never damaged. They are not the only option, and they are not always the right one, which is why my first question in consultation is not about veneers at all: how much of the tooth is left?
In this guide I explain when a chip can be repaired with bonding, when veneers for chipped teeth make more sense, and when a crown is the safer choice. I also share what the research says about how long each option lasts, what to do in the first hours after the accident, and what the treatment costs for patients who travel to Medellín.
In my 17 years of practice at Clínica Viena, most chipped front teeth come from ordinary moments: biting something hard, a fall, sports, or a tooth already weakened by a large old filling. The cause matters less than the size and depth of the chip, because those two things decide the treatment.
What to Do in the First Hours After You Chip a Tooth
Rinse your mouth with water and keep the fragment if you can find it. Store it in milk or in your saliva, not dry and not in tap water. Book a dental visit within a day or two, and sooner if there is pain, bleeding or a pink or red spot inside the chip, which can mean the nerve is exposed.
Do not glue the fragment back yourself, and do not wait weeks hoping the tooth will settle. A sharp edge can cut your tongue and lip, and exposed dentin is sensitive and can let bacteria reach the nerve. If you want to understand how deep each type of chip goes, I explain it in our guide to dental fractures.
Bringing the fragment helps, but it is not a promise that the same piece will go back on the tooth. In a retrospective study of 434 patients with crown fractures, direct restorations survived significantly better than adhesively reattached fragments (Bissinger et al., 2021).
When Veneers for Chipped Teeth Are the Right Choice
Veneers for chipped teeth make the most sense in four situations. First, when the chip is on a front tooth that shows when you smile and you want a repair that stays polished and color-stable for years. Second, when several teeth have small chips or worn edges and fixing them one by one would leave uneven shades.
Third, when the tooth is already discolored or has an old, stained filling, because a veneer covers the whole visible surface and resets the color. Fourth, when earlier bonding keeps breaking or staining and the patient wants a more durable material.
A veneer is a thin shell of ceramic bonded to the front of the tooth. For a chipped tooth, it rebuilds the missing corner and covers the visible face in one piece. The tooth needs a light preparation, and that step is irreversible, so I only recommend it when the benefit is clear.
I do not recommend veneers when the chip is tiny and limited to the enamel edge. Polishing or a small bonding repair removes far less tooth in those cases. I also hesitate when little healthy tooth is left, because a veneer needs enamel to bond to.
Veneers vs Bonding vs Crowns for a Chipped Tooth
The table below is the comparison I use in consultation. The right option depends on how much of the tooth is missing, whether the nerve is involved and how visible the tooth is.
| Option | Best for | Tooth removal | Typical lifespan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polishing | Tiny chip limited to the enamel edge | Minimal | Lasting if the edge stays stable |
| Bonding (resin) | Small to medium chip on one tooth, done in one visit | None or minimal | About 3 to 6 years |
| Ceramic veneer | Visible chip, discoloration or several chipped teeth | Light and irreversible | 10 to 15 years or more |
| Crown | Large break or a weakened tooth, for example after a root canal | The most | Longest for badly damaged teeth |
Notice that two of the four options remove little or no tooth. That is intentional: the least invasive treatment that solves the problem is the right one, and veneers for chipped teeth earn their place when the damage is too visible or too large for bonding.
What the Research Says About Veneers for Chipped Teeth
Direct resin repairs on front teeth are reliable but have a known weak point. In a systematic review of direct anterior composite restorations, fracture was the main reason for failure, and restorations that rebuilt the biting edge were especially prone to breaking (Shah et al., 2021). A chipped corner is exactly that situation.
Ceramic performs better over time. In a randomized clinical trial followed for up to 10 years, ceramic laminate veneers had a 100% survival rate, compared with 75% for indirect resin composite veneers (Gresnigt et al., 2019).
A systematic review and meta-analysis of porcelain laminate veneers found 89% survival at a median of 9 years, and glass-ceramic veneers reached 94% (Morimoto et al., 2016).
These studies do not look at chipped teeth specifically, so I read them as a general guide, not as a promise. The pattern is consistent: ceramic lasts longer than resin, and the biting edge is where resin tends to fail first.
How I Plan Veneers for Chipped Teeth at Clínica Viena
I start with a digital smile plan, so you can see the result before any tooth is touched. We scan your teeth, review how the chipped edge relates to your bite, and decide whether one veneer is enough or whether the neighboring teeth should be included to keep the shape and shade even.
Matching a single veneer to a natural neighbor is one of the hardest parts of cosmetic dentistry. I choose the shade with your natural teeth in daylight, and if the neighbor is darker I discuss whitening first so the veneer is made to match the final color.
Many patients combine the treatment with a trip to Colombia. If you are traveling from the United States, the process is built for it: a virtual consultation before you fly, the scan and planning, and the treatment in Medellín, as described on our veneers in Colombia page. Our dental tourism guide covers the logistics. If a resin repair is enough for your case, I will also explain our composite veneers option.
How Much Do Veneers for Chipped Teeth Cost?
A chipped tooth is usually treated with one or two veneers, not a full set, so the cost depends on how many teeth are involved. Our full-smile ceramic packages start at $5,200 for 20 e.max or Amber veneers, and I give you the exact quote for a single veneer after the scan.
For comparison, our veneers in Colombia page lists 10 veneers at $2,600 in Colombia against $15,000 or more in the United States. If a small chip only needs bonding, the cost is much lower, and I will tell you that before recommending veneers.
Aftercare for Veneers for Chipped Teeth
A repaired front tooth is still a tooth under force. Avoid biting hard objects such as ice, pen caps and fingernails, and cut very hard foods before eating them. If you grind your teeth at night, a night guard protects the veneer and the neighboring teeth, and our Essential package includes one.
If you have a chipped tooth and you are considering veneers for chipped teeth, send me a photo through our WhatsApp. I will tell you honestly whether bonding, a veneer or a crown fits your case, and what to expect before you decide to travel.

Can a veneer fix a chipped front tooth?
Yes, when there is enough healthy enamel to bond to. A ceramic veneer rebuilds the missing corner and covers the visible face of the tooth. If the chip is small, bonding may be enough, and if the tooth is badly broken, a crown may be the safer choice.
How long do veneers for chipped teeth last?
Ceramic veneers usually last 10 to 15 years or more with good care, while resin repairs usually last 3 to 6 years. In a 10-year clinical trial, ceramic veneers had 100% survival compared with 75% for indirect resin veneers (Gresnigt et al., 2019).
Do veneers for chipped teeth hurt?
The procedure is done with local anesthesia, so you should not feel pain while I work. Some sensitivity for a few days afterward is possible, and I explain what to expect before we start.
Should I get bonding or a veneer for a chipped tooth?
If the chip is small and the tooth is otherwise healthy, bonding repairs it in one visit and removes little or no tooth. If the chip is visible or large, or the tooth is discolored, a veneer lasts longer. I decide after examining the tooth and your bite.
