If you’ve started researching dental implants especially if you’re comparing options between the U.S. and Colombia, you’ve probably seen the word “implant” used loosely. Patients often think of it as one single piece. It isn’t.
A dental implant is actually a system of three separate components, each with its own material, function, and manufacturing standard. Understanding them isn’t just trivia. If you’re planning to travel for treatment, knowing what you’re actually paying for is one of the simplest ways to tell a serious clinic from one cutting corners.
This guide breaks down each part in plain language, based on how we explain it to our own international patients before they ever get in the chair.
The 3 Core Parts of a Dental Implant
Every dental implant, regardless of brand or country, is built from three components that work together to replace a missing tooth from the root up.
1. The Implant Body (Fixture)
This is the part most people picture when they hear “implant” a small screw, almost always made of titanium, that is surgically placed into the jawbone where the tooth root used to be.
Its job is to fuse with the bone through a biological process called osseointegration. Over several weeks, living bone cells grow directly onto the surface of the titanium, essentially locking it in place. This is what makes an implant function like a real tooth root instead of a temporary fix.
The surface of the fixture isn’t smooth — it’s treated (sandblasted, acid-etched, or laser-textured, depending on the brand) specifically to speed up and strengthen this bone integration. This surface treatment is one of the biggest quality differences between a certified implant system and a generic one.
2. The Abutment (Pilar)
The abutment is the connector piece that screws into the top of the implant body and sticks out above the gumline. It’s the bridge between the part buried in your bone and the part people actually see.
Abutments can be made of titanium or zirconia, depending on the case. In the front of the mouth, where esthetics matter more, a zirconia abutment is often used because it doesn’t create a gray shadow through the gum tissue the way metal sometimes can.
This piece is also where a lot of the mechanical stress of chewing gets distributed, so how precisely it fits the implant body matters far more than most patients realize.
3. The Crown
This is the visible “tooth” the part that restores your bite and your smile. It’s custom-made to match the shape, color, and translucency of your natural teeth, usually in zirconia or layered ceramic.
Unlike the fixture and abutment, the crown is the one piece patients evaluate purely by eye. But its long-term success still depends entirely on how well the two components underneath it were placed and connected.
What Are Dental Implants Made Of?
Titanium is the industry standard for the implant body. It’s been used in implant dentistry since the 1960s, and decades of research back its biocompatibility the body doesn’t recognize it as a foreign object, which is exactly why osseointegration works. Most reputable global brands (Straumann, Neodent, Biohorizon) manufacture in medical-grade titanium (Grade 4 or Grade 5 titanium alloy).
Zirconia shows up in two places: as an alternative material for the implant body itself (less common, used in select cases) and much more commonly as the material for abutments and crowns, where its tooth-like white color gives a more natural esthetic result than metal.
Here’s the part most patients never get told: not everything sold as a “dental implant” is made to this standard. In markets where dental tourism has grown quickly, we’ve seen implants without proper regulatory registration in Colombia, that means without INVIMA approval, offered at suspiciously low prices. Some of these are closer to industrial-grade screws than medical devices. They may look identical to a patient’s eye, but the alloy composition, surface treatment, and connection tolerance are not the same, and that has direct consequences for how long the implant lasts
Connection Types: Why the Fit Between Pieces Matters
The way the abutment connects to the implant body is called the prosthetic connection, and it comes in a few main types:
- External hexagon connection — the original design, still widely used, where a small hex-shaped piece sits on top of the implant.
- Internal hexagon or internal connection — the abutment fits inside the implant body rather than on top of it, which generally distributes chewing forces more evenly and reduces micro-movement over time.
- Conical connection — a tighter, taper-fit design used in many modern implant systems, associated with a stronger seal against bacterial infiltration at the implant-abutment junction.
You don’t need to memorize this to be a well-informed patient. What matters is this: the precision of that connection is manufactured, not eyeballed. It’s produced with tolerances measured in microns. A poorly manufactured or mismatched connection is one of the more common and most preventable causes of implant complications down the road, including screw loosening and bone loss around the implant.
