Full Dentures in Colombia

Total prosthesis is the best option when teeth have been completely lost. It is important to know that there are many options according to each need, the properties vary among cost, naturalness and resistance. The total prosthesis can normally last between 4 to 5 years. More than this time it is not advisable to leave them in the mouth because they become porous to be made of acrylic and begins the maladaptation in the mouth, as the gums are reabsorbed over time and become smaller while the prosthesis will have the same size, producing difficulty eating and speaking.

Types of Full Dentures in Colombia

High impact full denture

High impact total prosthesis: The high impact total prosthesis is the most recommended by us because it uses a special acrylic that makes it more resistant than conventional acrylic. Additionally, the use of teeth of several layers of acrylic make a prosthesis not only more resistant but more aesthetic and natural, because it has more effects of the mouth. This type of prosthesis is also the one we recommend when prosthesis over implants are going to be made, since it has better properties in all aspects. It should be considered that independently that it is more resistant than the conventional one, it is not recommended to overuse it. It should be taken care of accidental falls and improper use.

Conventional full denture

This prosthesis is elaborated with the same steps as the one mentioned above. Except that it is more affordable. The price depends on the type of teeth chosen as its value varies according to the characteristics of each one.

Immediate full denture

As its name indicates, it is elaborated immediately with only the initial impression of the mouth and it is sent to the laboratory. The teeth and the shade of the tooth are chosen at the same time and the prosthesis is ready the same day or the following day.

It is used in cases where the patient for some emergency has lost the prosthesis and prevents him from doing his normal activities. It is also used when dental implants are required as a temporary prosthesis or when certain surgeries are going to be performed in the gum. It is also used in patients who still have teeth in the mouth but for some reason, whether dental mobility or tooth decay should be removed, these prostheses are placed temporarily. These are overlaid with a special material to last certain days while healing and after that period begins and with the final prosthesis.

This type of prosthesis is not recommended for continuous use. Its use is recommended on a temporary basis because when it is made from one day to the next it cannot copy all the movements of the patient’s mouth, making a wrong adaptation.

High Aesthetics full denture

Contrary to what many might think, there are also high aesthetics in terms of dental prostheses, but the sense is totally different from the normal aesthetics in teeth. Regarding total prosthesis, the higher the esthetics, the more natural the prosthesis looks. The features of the prosthesis, such as spaces, crooked teeth and stains, as well as the quality of the teeth should be natural. The high esthetic teeth for prosthesis have more layers, which makes them much more natural and more resistant.

How long does the full denture treatment last

The treatment of total prosthesis can last from one day to another in case of immediate prosthesis. However, it can take 4 or 5 appointments in case of the other types of prosthesis, which are the ones we recommend the most. The treatment can take 1 month, in international patients we make a special protocol with the laboratory in which we reduce the total treatment time by up to 1 week without affecting the results.

  • In the first appointment the initial impressions are made with which we will elaborate special trays made to measure

  • In the second appointment, the final impression will be taken with the special material for this purpose. In this appointment, the patient is asked to perform certain gesturing movements so that by the time the final prosthesis is ready it does not fall off when talking and eating.

  • Then a rim test is done where the patient's bite is tested and it is proven that the heights are correct, the shape and color of the teeth is chosen and sent back to the laboratory

  • Later in another appointment the teeth test is done, it is checked that the color is correct for the person's skin tone, it is recommended that it be a natural tone since very white teeth can look unnatural and at this stage certain "characterizations" can be given that refer to elements that make the prosthesis more natural, here spaces can be added, malpositions and stains can be placed if the patient wishes.

  • In the final appointment, the prosthesis is already tested and it is verified that it is correctly adapted. It is important to remember that a new prosthesis is something like "New Shoes", they can bother you during the first week, or even months, the important thing is to attend control appointments and verify if it is a normal problem of adaptation and if it is necessary to correcting any point that may be lacerating the patient can be done promptly.

Care of full dentures

  • The total denture should not be washed with toothpaste as it is very abrasive and can damage it. Ideally, it should be washed with liquid soap and a special brush for dentures. If not found, a large hard bristle brush is preferably recommended.

  • It is normal that during the first 8 days you feel difficulty chewing, speaking and swallowing while your muscles get used to the new function, this discomfort can last even months

  • It is necessary when chewing with the prosthesis to have food on both sides and thus prevent the prosthesis from wearing out on only one side.

  • To wash the prosthesis, consider doing it over a sink filled with water or on top of a towel, in case the prosthesis falls, it will not suffer fractures.

  • Once a week you can place it in a glass with water and baking soda overnight.

  • Submerge the prosthesis in a glass of water with COREGA TABS every fortnight to keep the prosthesis free of bacteria and fungi.

  • Remove the prosthesis every night and deposit it in a glass of water, this will make the tissues remain oxygenated and rested.

  • You must keep a soft brush different from the denture to clean and massage the gum, palate and tongue.

  • Never wash your prosthesis with hot water, or place it in boiling water to clean it as it can form irreparably

  • If the prosthesis has yellow stains or stones, place it in a glass with white vinegar for 12 hours and then remove and brush the stained areas, this will make the prosthesis recover its color. Do not do it more than 2 times a year.

  • Remember that installing the full denture will change the sounds of words when you speak. For this, it is necessary to perform gesticulation exercises to strengthen the lips and improve the ability to express themselves when speaking.
