Dental crowns in Colombia

Dental crowns are the treatment performed when a large part of the tooth has been lost due to old restorations, caries or generalized fractures. At Clinica Viena we have a whole range of options in order to achieve total naturalness and resistance, whether it is a tooth in the smile area or a tooth in the back area.

Types of dental crowns, materials and which one to choose according to your need

All-ceramic crowns

All-ceramic crowns are the ideal option for the smile area since they do not have metal underneath. In the elaboration it is possible to play more with the natural effects of the tooth, making it the most esthetic option of all.

Zirconium crowns

Zirconium is a higher cost material, but it is excellent when a more resistant option than all-ceramic crowns is required. It is also desired to have a esthetic look and naturalness since zirconium is a kind of “white metal”. It is ideal for a highly esthetic restoration in molars.

Metal ceramic crown

This type of crowns is an excellent cost-benefit option since they are the most affordable. All different options are made from esthetic material since the ceramic on them gives them the color of the adjacent teeth. It is the first option when “sections” are required, several crowns glued together to replace a missing tooth because the metal makes it very resistant. This option is not recommended for smile areas.

Acrylic crown

Acrylic or temporary crowns are made to protect the tooth while the laboratory work of the definitive crown is being done in any of the materials mentioned above. This material can last in the mouth for 1 month, it is not recommended to leave for long periods of time because it becomes porous and can contribute to the accumulation of bacterial plaque and halitosis (bad breath).

Indirect resin crown

This crown is not very common, but it is recommended in cases where the patient, for financial reasons, cannot make the final crown. Also, when the patient requires many crowns on their teeth and for the value can be done later, this is the best option. It is cheaper than the definitive options but it is more resistant than the temporary crowns in acrylic that would only resist 1 month in the mouth in optimal conditions.

Inlay type partial crowns

For people who want to preserve the maximum dental structure there are also partial crowns. They are crowns that cover part of the tooth only in order to take care of the tooth structure to the maximum and be minimally invasive.

Gold crowns

Although this material is obviously the least esthetic of all the above, it is the most resistant. It has the best adaptation, the best resistance to fracture due to its flexibility and the one with the best properties in the mouth. It could be used, for example, on teeth in areas that are not visible (upper molars). We know that it is not a material for all tastes but due to its incredible properties we did not want to take it out of this list so that the patients themselves can be informed about all its benefits if they require them.

How long does the treatment take?

The treatment of crowns usually requires the following steps: Final impression, coping try-in, ceramic try-in and cementation. Between appointments there may be a gap of 1 week while the laboratory prepares the required work and sends it back to the clinic.

In cases of patients who live outside the country all the steps can be done in a week by doing the tests the same day and sending it immediately. For this type of treatment, we must be informed in advance as it requires high synchrony between dentist – laboratory.
